It doesn't try to be something it's not. It's a horror movie, plain and simple. It gets going right away and doesn't make you wait for stuff to happen.
The pacing is good, it's never boring. The story is pretty simple, but gets the job done. We wanna see scary stuff, right?
Yes, and we get that. There are a couple of scenes that are quite suspenseful, and there's some really cool scary imagery.
There are some jump scares I don't mind them but only one made me jump. With just some tiny tweaks, some of the scary parts could have been for real scary, well, to me at least.
Juliana Harkavy's acting is pretty solid, we see her face quite a lot, but that's alright because she's pretty.
There are a couple of the secondary characters acting that took me a little out of it, but mostly it's OK.
Besides some poor acting from the minor cast I could also wish some of the main characters reactions were a little more..
She sees some pretty creepy stuff, but a lot of times she doesn't seem to get scared. This must be one tough chick!
I would have been scared crap-less if I was in her shoes. Anyhow, take it for what it is, and you'll probably like it. At least I know I like these short and sweet horror movies, get in, see some scary stuff, get out.
I wasn't really expecting much, since most horror movies nowadays are pretty generic, but this one was surprisingly good!
The creepiness starts early on, instead of the usual nothingness that precedes most horror films and you get the back story as the film progresses which I found was actually rather interesting.
Also the whole atmosphere the film sets up is pretty creepy and chilling with more than a few good scares. Some of said scares were a little predictable, but scary non the less.
Finally I thought the music and sound effects were decent, and helped with setting the mood. All in all a good film, despite the obviously low budget.
The only reason I'm not giving this movie any less than a five is because it actually had me intrigued for a while. Short storyline.
It's about police rookie Jessica Lorren Juliana Harkavy on he first shift ever as a police officer. She is just suppose to watch the place for the night, but soon finds out she is not alone.
Not alone indeed. The movie takes great advantage over a small set and makes the environment creepy, as well as she being alone there is another factor to why its creepy.
There are some good timed jump scares, so unsettling moments where i kinda wanna know what is going on.
The acting is not very good, but fair to be a budged kind of movie, there is nothing special about the screenplay, the score or any of that stuff, but it's decent.
Technically everything is not too shabby. The really cool thing was the concept and how the story could be awesome. Now here's the deal breaker.
The last 20 minutes are stupid in my opinion. It's actually so dumb and thoughtless and a shame to the build up. I'm not gonna spoil anything if you wanna give it a go, but you will most likely be disappointed at the end.
Another surprise low budget horror film that shows the amount of money you put in has nothing to do with the end product.
The movie itself starts out simple yet obvious enough with a rookie officer, Loren Juliana Harkavy pulling last shift duty on a closing precinct.
I use that word since the premise is awfully familiar with "Assault on Precinct 13". Anyway, that being said, the story similarities end there.
I did catch a few camera shots and setup scares that also reminded me of John Carpenter style, but what is wrong with borrowing from a master?
So the inevitable ensues and a story of a cult leader type figure killing a few of his followers and himself in the prison the story is intermingled throughout via flashbacks and visions of old footage turns into a living nightmare for Loren.
Throughout the film it is hard to tell if she is imagining it, being taunted for being a rookie or legit is in a haunted police station.
This is what makes the tension build and keep you watching. Their are some truly disturbing images in this movie that are subtle yet very effective to get under your skin.
The highlight of this movie is just not being sure through the whole thing just what exactly is going on. This leads you to a fantastic ending that will keep you thinking after the credits roll.
All the elements of a quality horror movie are here along with a capable cast of actors and some film devotion from director Anthony DiBlasi.
Great Shocktober flick. Check it out. I am a horror fan. I love all things horror especially when it comes to horror movies.
This was a good film in my opinion and I haven't heard of it until I watched it with my friend and we really liked it. It is a creepy movie and it's a good movie too.
I mean it does have it's annoying ghost movie plot sequences but i do like this movie. LordJiggy 19 September Clearly, a low budget film.
Good film-makers, when confronted with a lack of funds, will compensate with a lot of creativity. The film makes good use of their locale, and builds an air of dread that slowly begins to pay off.
One nice touch is the use of quiet to build tension. In a few places, the music becomes intrusive, but a lot of the creepiness is in odd sounds with nice use of the 5.
Only once or twice did they go for the "booga booga coming out at you out of a dark place" shtick. I thought the lead actress was very believable through most of the film.
If the film faltered anywhere, it was nearer the end, when the lead character began to respond in more typical "illogical victim," but one could almost understand that given the psychological state of that character.
They had to go for "the twist," and in this case Otherwise, very solid effort, making an authentically spooky and fairly original film on very little money.
Found this movie and knew very little about it. As an avid film lover and browser of all things IMDb If you enjoy anything that is not a Hollywood crapbuster and you don't mind feeling like your not sure whats going on then you will probably get a kick from this surprise.
Is it perfect, no. There is a few scenes where your wondering what else could possibly be happening but wow, if a majority of movies could learn a fraction from this one i would be in a world of happy!
Well done on a different and refreshing film full of bumps and jumps. Loved it. I watched this movie late one night when I wasn't able to sleep.
I was rewarded for that. I was in dark room, by myself which added to atmosphere of this type of movie. During many parts of it I was on edge and it gave me the creeps.
But this one was. It was so well done that it prompted me to do my first review of a movie and give it the rating it deserves. Take the time to watch this one, I do recommend watching in the dark with no distractions so that you get the most out of the suspense and creepiness of it all.
Rookie officer Jessica Loren Juliana Harkavy is assigned to work the last shift at a police station before it is due to close.
This seemingly routine task soon turns into a nightmare when the 'lone' officer starts noticing paranormal activity within the police station.
Part of the beauty with the Last Shift lies with its simplicity - it essentially takes place in one location and attempts to use its isolated setting to try and draw fear from the audience.
I suppose it succeeds in this respect to a certain degree, but there are a whole host of problems with this film The isolated setting does serve the film well in the early stages in that there's a sense of claustrophobia to proceedings and it is possible to feel some fear for our protagonist, but sadly director Anthony DiBlasi doesn't seem to know how to develop the story in a manner that is either scary or interesting many of the scenes are repetitive and start to become tiresome.
Whist the film has a solid protagonist it does lack a decent antagonist meaning that it never really felt that scary to me.
In fact it is the laziness inherent in this film that makes it so dull as well as featuring scene after scene that makes the whole film feel as though it's on some kind of tedious loop at times, the film also has other unimaginative sequences such as a pile of chairs being stacked on top of one another - how many times have we seen this before???
Even when the antagonists are introduced, DiBlasi mostly reduces them to being rather thinly drawn caricatures who spend most of their time pouncing at the screen in rather cheap 'cinematic' fashion - a better developed backstory on the Paymon family might have made the film slightly more interesting.
Whilst DiBlasi's narrative is dull and repetitive I got the feeling that he was trying to compensate for this in other areas; he really went to town in the makeup that he used on the Paymon family some of it is actually quite good , but again it felt like he was content in making them 'look' scary rather than actually making them scary there is a difference.
Julian Harkavy is the main bright spot in this tedious mess and she is very convincing in her respect role. She gives an incredibly intense performance when required, she's a tough cookie who can handle herself, but has a certain vulnerability about her which helps to keep the picture fairly grounded.
DiBlasi seems to lose control towards the end where things start to get silly and the film is chocked full of WTF moments towards the end. This is an underrated horror thriller which gets most things right- the pacing, jump scare and even acting is pretty decent which is a shock since no one has really heard of this film.
DiBlasi is a talent to watch out for judging by the way he gets everything right with a limited budget. Last shift is a great film. Go watch it for the amazingly well done jump scares.
Pretty fun for a low budget horror. My biggest complaint is I think they really blew an opportunity. They revealed things way too quickly.
It's a simple fact of horror movies; the more you show the villain, the less scary they become. When you reveal the monster or in this case, ghost of a crazy murderous family they lose their shock value.
I kept waiting for a bigger climax but was sorely disappointed. All that said, brilliant set up, great execution using a single location, and awesome acting.
It's worth a watch! Others might not think the movie is as good as i'm saying it is, but this is my opinion. The movie actually scared me, which is something that doesn't happen often with horror movies.
It didn't need to be a generic slasher film in order to induce fear. It delved deep into psychological fear, which is what I like.

Her mother pleads with her not to take the job, as her father, also a police officer, was killed on duty. After assuring her mother, Loren reports for duty and her commanding officer Cohen, leads her on a brief tour, during which he explains that a HAZMAT team will be there to collect evidence that is difficult to dispose of and that she is not permitted to leave her post.
Before he leaves, he gives Loren his phone number in case of emergency. Loren becomes bored and almost falls asleep, though she wakes when she hears knocking.
She does not see anyone at the door but finds a homeless man in the hallway; he urinates on the floor and refuses to leave.
Loren takes him to a holding cell, where the door suddenly closes and locks behind her. The lights go out, a bloody-faced person surprises her in the door's window, and she drops her flashlight.
An unidentified person picks it up and taunts her. When the lights come back on, the door opens and no one is there. Loren is further unsettled when she sees chairs and doors moving on their own, ghostly figures, and hears voices singing.
She also receives a series of distress calls from a woman named Monica Young, who says she has been taken hostage by a cult; the police dispatcher confirms that all emergency calls have been rerouted to the new station.
Loren encounters a loiterer, Marigold, who tells her that she was in a cell when the police brought in an infamous cult, led by the charismatic John Michael Paymon.
Marigold says the story told to the public, that the cult was killed at their residence, is untrue; instead, they committed suicide at the station one year ago to the day.
Marigold leaves after, humming the song Loren heard earlier. Further paranormal events at the station reveal that the cult worships the king of Hell, a being also named Paimon.
Before committing mass suicide, Paymon threatened to come back and destroy everything. Ryan Price, a fellow police officer, arrives at the station, and Loren accuses him of planning the events as a hazing ritual.
Confused, he insists he has come by to check up on her, as he had served with her father. Price confirms that the murderous cult was captured alive and tells her that her father, who died apprehending them, would be proud of her.
As he leaves, Loren sees a bullet wound in the back of his head and he disappears. After seeing several visions of the cultists and their victims, Loren calls Cohen and says that she cannot finish her shift but repents when he threatens to fire her.
